Left-Brain Dominance

I don't like abstract art.

There, I said it.

It doesn't "speak to me." I like art when it at least gives you the impression of some thing or person. And quite frankly, the more realistic a piece of art, the more impressive I find it. It is very difficult to get a person's face to actually look like a person's face; light and perspective are also tricky; hands always end up looking crazy unless you have true talent, and I don't. I feel like I am capable of doing many of the abstract art pieces I have seen. Geometric shapes, various colors, squiggles or sprinkles of color are all do-able, even by my 4 year old.

I know this isn't a new point of view or unique to me. I am just officially joining that club. I've always been a little afraid to admit this in case someone will think I "just don't get it." Well, I'm old and gray now and I'm not afraid to admit that I actually don't get it.

We drive by the Eagan Art House everyday and they have a new sculpture.

Really?

I have always been a big supporter of the Art House and will continue to be, but I wonder a little every time I see this (every day). What do people see in this? What, besides its size, is impressive or thought provoking or difficult about this? Does it have a deeper meaning that I'm missing? Help me out here.

You know what else? Poems should either rhyme or be very funny.

Shake Shack

Here's a weird thought - someone from Shake Shack in New York City read my blog. Check on the comment from the New York ! #4 post on Saturday July 6:

Shake Shack said...
Jenny, thanks so much for taking the time to visit Shake Shack on your recent trip to NYC. I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a great experience, so I hope you'll be able to give us another shot next time you're in town.

Hope you had an awesome vacation!

Brandy, SHAKE SHACK

OK, let's be realistic. I firmly believe in the theory that nothing on the internet is private, including Twitter, Blogs, emails, etc; as well as its ancestor, the adage "Never put anything on paper that you don't want the world to read." But seriously, how crazy is it that Shake Shack is cruising the internet looking for tiny little sentences about their store on tiny little blogs like mine. This is the only line in that post referencing Shake Shack:

That night, we met Jim for dinner at Shake Shack, which was good, but not necessarily worth the wait and standing up to eat since there weren't any tables available

I'm not saying I feel violated or anything. My blog isn't private or secured, except that you can't search for it in search engines like Google. Supposedly you have to know the address to find it. When you type Jenny and Jim into Google, all you get are reference to Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey. What I'm saying is that Shake Shack must have a lot of extra money to pay someone to track down these things and respond (very kindly, I must say) to each one. Imagine how far down my blog must be when you type "Shake Shack" into Google!! I wonder if it is because I included a hyperlink and they can trace it back that way? Just for fun, I will make every mention of Shake Shack into a hyperlink. I wonder if Brandy will read this entry too??

Meet Henry

Oh squiggly line in my eye fluid.
I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision.
But when I try to look at you, you scurry away.
Are you shy, squiggly line?
Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye?
Oh, squiggly line,
it's alright, you are forgiven.

This is what my personal "floater", Henry, looks like. He's been in my right eye as long as I can remember. He is comforting.

Do you have a floater?
Did you name it?
Am I weird?

Picking berries

We picked berries at Sam's farm for the second time this year.
Note to self: wait for the fall strawberries to pick a large quantity! I know spring strawberries are exciting, but the fall ones are much sweeter and less picked over.

Raspberries weren't great this year, but strawberries made up for it. I still have jars and jars of jam from previous years, so I didn't bother to get enough for jammin'. But our freezer and bellies are full!

Laura was at school, I missed her more than I expected. She is a great picker and has been since she was very little. I remember picking raspberries one year when she was about 2 and wondering where she was at one point. She was on the next row, quietly and carefully picking away.

But Adam was a lot of fun, too

But wait...there's more!

We listened to the music one week at MarketFest and Laura was too shy to dance. She decided she was going to dance the next week, no matter what.

And she did!

Laura made Adam an airplane.
They both pounce on the boxes when I get packages.

This is as high as I got. I surprised myself by freaking out about the height. I'm much stronger, but apparently not mentally. I'm determined to work on that though.

Clearly the kids don't have the same fear of heights...

Geez, I'm behind!

Quick! Play catch up with your blog pics!

The library offered a chance for kids to try different instruments

Sax is the only one Adam would try. The boy has some lungs!

Laura tried every one.

Violin was her favorite.

Jim bought me a router!

3 and 4 year olds playing tennis is ridiculous and cute.

Passion fruit vine. Weirdest flower I've ever seen.
