Just before school started, Laura got to judge her first belt exam. Its pretty bittersweet to see her getting to be the big kid with the little ones looking up at her.

2018 Diamonds
This year's Diamond National karate tournament was Laura's first as a black belt. That means she gets to move into the black belt room and the competition was more intense. 12 girls in her age / weight and she earned 3rd in both form and sparring! Way to go kid!

This is what Adam does during karate tournaments.
Top 3 black belts get to choose trophy or medal. She chose one of each, here she is testing if its real gold, I mean bronze (it's neither).
The 1st place trophies for black belts are super cool, but 2nd and 3rd are just like all the rest she has in her closet. I'm guessing she'll be choosing medal from now on, unless she takes the top spot. Something to shoot for!

Helping the world
Adam and I have been doing some community service lately. Once or twice a month, we make meals at Open Arms and once a month he's been reading to animals at the shelter. The theory is that the calm, constant voice and the fact that the kid isn't reaching out for them will make the skittish animals more comfortable and to feel safe with children. It really really really works. And it gets Adam to read out loud! I'm proud of him.
