2017 Total Eclipse!

Jim likes stuff like eclipses. So last year, he decided we needed to witness this one along the line of totality. He reserved a hotel room in Marshall, Missouri well in advance. Since it was just a two-day, one-night trip all to enjoy about 2 minutes of darkness, we decided to try to make the trip itself fun. Have you ever looked at RoadsideAmerica.com? Its a bunch of random, weird stuff you can stop and see on your road trip. On the way down, we stopped at a rock n roll McDonalds...

a giant fish statue...

a giant ice cream cone...

a pyramid house...

the place where sliced bread was first sold...

We skipped the high trestle bridge and the place in Missouri where the Mormons believe Adam and Eve went after they were ejected from the Garden of Eden. But we drive this road a lot and will catch them another time!

That evening and the next morning, we mostly hung out around the hotel, walked to Walmart, talked to other eclipse watcher people, and watched Teen Titans Go. Then, about 2 hours before it was supposed to start, we got serious about the weather watch. We knew it might be cloudy, but it wasn't obvious how cloudy until just at the last few hours. I decided I wasn't driving all that way just to sit in the rain, so we made a plan and started driving southeast, toward the clearest area around. As we drove, the moon started covering the sun a little at a time, but that takes a while. When the sky seemed blue enough and we didn't want to miss any more, we started looking for somewhere to stop and watch. Keep in mind, we were on small, backroads in rural Missouri. I saw on the map a church up ahead, so we figured the church parking lot would be a good spot to stop. Well...here's the church:

Huh. Not what we were expecting, but it was lovely! We wondered if stopping at a cemetery was rude, but we decided it was public-ish land and we would be respectful. Plus, if we hadn't stopped, we wouldn't have met Nancy:

Born Feb 6. 1776!!! The kids were so impressed.

We had lunch under the canopy and laid on a blanket to watch the show. It was so perfect!

Very cool experience! Everyone was super impressed with the eclipse itself and we're all glad we made the trip.

The state capitol was just 30 minutes farther southeast, and Jim decided he didn't want to have to come back here someday to cross it off the list. So we journeyed into Jefferson City and toured the capitol.

The worst tour guide we've ever had, but one of the prettiest buildings we've seen yet.

The way home was just plain long. Traffic added at least 3 hours to our total trip, and it was long enough to begin with. Here we are slowed down enough for me to stick my phone out the window to take a picture of Adam's waving hand (i.e. we were going very slowly!). But people were nice and patient, and Jim was a super hero driver.  And for once in their lives, the kids slept in the car on a road trip!

Our view for much of the trip. Brake lights.

But totally worth it!

Izze Izze Izze!

We stumbled upon an empty stage, and they were finishing their Izze drinks. Of course, they decided to make dances about Izze's.

Yellowstone Trip - Driving Home

The drive home was just lovely. I didn't expect North Dakota to be pretty, but they have their own formations that look very similar to the Badlands. Pretty!

One of the nights, Jim and I left the kids in the hotel and walked over to a Japanese restaurant to get take out (and then Taco Johns for the kids). We sat at the bar and had a mini-date while we waited for the food. Its so fun to have older kids!

I have 2 friends familiar with Montana, and when asked, they recommended Mackenzie River Pizza's Thai Pizza. Since they don't know each other and this is the only thing they could think of to recommend doing in Montana, I figured we better make a point to get there. The pizza was fantastic, of course!

We toured the North Dakota State Capitol, of course. Our first one with no dome!

And we stopped at the tallest structure in the the western hemisphere, the KVLY-TV mast. Pretty exciting stuff!

All done with Yellowstone posts! It was a crazy awesome trip, especially the fact that our families joined us. We saw the worlds largest Holstein statue, Bison statue, Prairie Chicken statue, TV tower, and Corn Palace. Now that's my kind of fun!

Camping - Snake River Campground

We finally found a place to go last minute camping! I am an avid planner in almost all areas of my life, but camping just doesn't seem to be one of them. And around here, if you want to find a camping site within driving distance of the cities, you better plan early. I guess that's an argument for owning a cabin, though that will never happen in our family. Who wants to take care of 2 houses?

So state forests are all first come first serve. We scored a perfect camping site Friday afternoon at Snake River Campground. Its about 1.5 hours north on I-35. Its a lovely campground and as we were cruising the sites to find our favorite, the kids overwhelmingly chose this one the second we saw it. They were right! Tons of space for both tents, lots of trees right through the middle, plenty of parking, privacy from other sites...just perfect.

See? Perfect

Why the bike helmet Adam?

I'm not sure how to explain this photograph, except that we were chilling and everyone was happy.

We take turns being the "Fire-boss", which everyone loves. Who doesn't love fire?

We brought lots of stuff this time! Guess its good we have a minivan
I was experimenting with cots (nope) and air mattresses (yep), which took up a lot of room.

Ava had fun after she got used to being tethered. "Unwinding Ava from the trees" was a task at which we all took turns also.

Love this view in the morning

And this one

The bugs were miserable on our little hike we took and there isn't a nearby activity to fill time, like hiking to a waterfall, or climbing a mountain, or anything. But there is a beautiful river with 2 great swimming spots that filled our time nicely and were definitely refreshing and cleansing after all the bug spray and sweat. And if we were more river-experienced, we could have planned a float down the river or something. As it was, we ended up with lots of down time at the camp site. It took me a while for my anxiety to wind down and accept that enough to just chill. But I got there and we all had a great time. I'm going to remember this as a place to go for a last minute nature fix.
